For the majority of my adult life, my circle of friends knew not to ask me about my family. So how did I go from it being ‘taboo’ to it being my life’s calling… where I speak about family estrangement all the time now?!?
I tell people that it’s one of those things that just kind of fell into my lap. I didn’t have visions or goals directed towards this at all.
One of the many pieces of the puzzle
In fact, I remember several years ago attending an intimate retreat where I made a comment to the special guest of honor and international author about how I was surprised to hear that most of her speaking was directed at entrepreneurs (her book was written for anyone).
I was disappointed because I had expected something else. I made a comment to her that I was not an entrepreneur and had no plans to be. Funny thing how life had other plans for me! Now, I can clearly see how this was setting me up for my future as one of the many pieces of the puzzle.
The Anatomy Of A Calling – Lissa Rankin book review
Recently, I was able to read a new book by another one of my favorite authors – Lissa Rankin. Her book ‘The Anatomy Of A Calling” is exactly the book for someone who is interested in following what their calling may be. What makes it perfect is that it doesn’t matter what part of the journey you are on, each one of us gets something out of it. I kept highlighting and underlining parts of the book with notes in the sidelines “That’s me! or Remember to do this! ”
It really goes into depth of her own personal ride and what she learned on the way along with tips on how we can make it work for our own path.
Bam! Right Away!
Right away in the first chapter she makes this statement, “Our future lies in embracing our human emotions, our vulnerability, our interconnectedness, our intuition, our inclination to collaborate, our caretaking of Mother Earth, and our desire to love one another with an open heart.”
Upon reading that, it is clear to me that these are qualities I had learned to embrace as I first began on this particular journey. For example, in the past, I was not one to allow my emotions or my intuition to be acknowledged. Once I allowed for those to be freed, magical things started happening for me.
Love without attachment
Then in the second chapter there was one particular sentence that resonated deeply with me. “The lesson comes in learning to love without attachment, to open your heart all the way and then let go of grasping at any specific outcome.”
Goodness gracious. This could be used in so many scenarios and yet I will share how it deals with family estrangement. I had finally learned to love without any specific expectation. That actually came easier once I freed my emotions that were attached to any specific outcome.
This was also easily applied to any specific outcome of where this new path was taking me on as an entrepreneur. “Keep the faith, everything will unfold exactly as it must.” (quote from – chapter 8)
Hero’s Practice and Hero’s Guidepost
Lissa’s personal story and personal examples were very captivating. It was hard to put the book down! She added even more by having action steps for us to put into practice. Each chapter ended with two separate sections: Hero’s Practice and Hero’s Guidepost. In these sections she would give us activities to implement into our life.
I enjoyed them all, however my very favorite was from chapter 14 where she gave us a step-by-step practice on how to “Become One With Synchronicity”. I had experienced so many synchronicities on this journey and now that I have this practice that I do each morning, I am flooded with even more.
Lissa Rankin’s book “The Anatomy Of A Calling” will be released on December 29, 2015

This is the first book of hers that I was given free of charge for me to share my personal and honest review of. I receive no compensation for any sales of the book.

It’s wonderful when we find those books that engage us so deeply and have us underlining and pausing for thought and more thought. I’ll certainly be adding this one to my reading list. The point about love without attachment is huge in my opinion. And a very key piece I imagine in your teaching and work.

All the highlighted sections of your post resonate with me, but I’m particularly interested to read Lisa’s practice on how to “Become One With Synchronicity”. I also am a great fan of Lisa’s, and have really benefitted from her sharing her journey, and thus supporting us in our own. As I say that, I realize that the statement is so true of you as well. You are such a blessing in the lives of so many; so much gratitude is flowing from me to you.

Thank you Joyce! You are so sweet. There are many practices in her book that are beneficial for each of us. I do utilize others as well. It’s just that the ‘Become One With Synchronicity’ really touches my heart deeply as many people, places, things, and events transpire quite surprisingly when it seems to be the time for it. The more I pay attention to the synchronicity happening in my life, the more I see!

Oh this is so true and so appreciated. It is where I am at and it so nice to see it in writing from someone else. “The lesson comes in learning to love without attachment, to open your heart all the way and then let go of grasping at any specific outcome.”

Thank you Elda. May you muster up all the moxie you must in order to say yes to your calling fully. Family estrangement is such a core trauma and so many hurt so much because of it. Thank you for being who you are and healing those who can benefit from what you offer.
Much love
Lissa
